How often should I wash my dog?
I get asked this a lot. It really varies on the dog. I wash my dogs once a month. They play outside and roll around in the grass every day. Dogs that go to the dog parks frequently tend to get pretty smelly and need to get cleaned up. Years ago, the rule of thumb was twice a year. Or worse yet, hose them down and never wash them. But people didn't have dog shampoo then or if they did it wasn't a very high quality shampoo and the dog would get dry skin. The shampoos and conditioners I use in the shop are top of the line and made specifically for the cleaning system. The pH is ideal for dogs so the fear of drying out the skin is not a factor. If your dog stinks it's time for a bath! To give your dog a really good bath it is very important that you brush them out first. And that is probably the second most asked question.
How often should I brush my dog?
Daily would be best but most of us just don't have the time. At least weekly would help you avoid most problems in the coat. If you wait and only brush when your dog is matted they will hate being brushed. This should actually a relaxing and good bonding time for both of you. You also have the opportunity to check the skin for abrasions or changes, like bumps (cysts) you can keep an eye on. Brushing helps distribute the natural oils that are on the skin. Ladies, remember when your Grandmother used to tell you to brush your hair 100 strokes each night? The same reason applies. Those of you with short haired dogs don't get off the hook here. Brushing weekly will keep the amount of dog hair on the floors and clothes down to a low roar, too.
What about fleas and ticks?
With Denverās typical low humidity fleas are not as much of an issue as other areas of the US. Does that mean they aren't here? No, you still have to check your dog and consult with your Vet. Ticks, on the other hand can be around. Any time you go to a park with high grass/weeds or an off leash park, do a quick body check on your pup. Humm, maybe when you're bathing them after getting all wet and dirty? The High Country is tons of fun for both you and your dog but definitely check you're dog after the romp. Also, consider at least a spray for the time you are up there if you don't want the monthly dose type. Again, it's a good idea to check with your Vet.
